Agder Energi Nett AS, Inflight Systems AS, Telaris AS and Teknova AS recently received NOK 200 000 to perform a pre-project on new sensor technologies applied to condition monitoring of wooden poles. The electrical grid maintained by Agder Energi Nett AS comprises of more than 180 000 wooden poles that are prone to rot. As a wooden pole starts to rot, it can break during storms and cause blackouts for large areas. To avoid this reduction in service, this pre-project will perform a study of different sensor technologies and determine if it is possible to improve the current detection methods of rot in wooden poles. If it is possible to detect rot more easily, this will be used to reduce the maintenance costs associated with the wooden poles.
