In light of the challenges connected to climate changes caused by emission of greenhouse gases, numerous efforts have started to find solutions for reducing the use of fossil carbon based material and replacing them with biocarbon. Teknova is partner together with Elkem and Sintef in a research project that aims at using biocarbon for production of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys. The project plans on subjecting the biomass to a pyrolysis process that produces charcoal and bio oil. The charcoal is then used as a reduction material in a smelting furnace for alloy production. The off gases from the pyrolysis reactor and the smelting furnace is lead to an energy recovery system in order to utilize the energy stored in the off gas for making electricity and fulfilling internal energy need of the process. That will enable the total process to be carbon neutral.
This project is funded by the Norwegian research council.
