Metallurgical Scale-up

An important challenge for the metallurgical industry is to scale-up a process. Whether it is an existing industrial process or a pilot version, the complexity of the problem cause the industry all too often to increase a process by only a few percent at a time. Similarly, if one want to study a full-scale industrial process, the problem lies in constructing a good model.

Metallurgical Scale-up

Teknova has run a project in collaboration with four major metallurgical companies and partners from academia. The problem has been addressed by establishing proper mathematical tools for better understanding of the fundamental properties of the process. The analysis reveals relevant non-dimensional groups which may be used as general guide-lines for scale-up of a process. Real cases from the industry have been studied, and the methodology has proven to be a powerful tool. One example of a problem within this project is thin casting of Silicon, which is illustrated in the figure above.
